Brigid of Kildare

The distinctive St. Brigid’s Cross lozenge (diamond centre) design, made from woven straw or rushes, hung from the rafters or over entryways of buildings and homes, thus invoking the saint's blessing and protection for the year. It is thought to keep evil, fire and hunger away. In addition the Brigid cross is one of the national symbols of Ireland.

The Brigid's cross is typically woven on 1 February which is now a public holiday in Ireland.  In the lead up to the holiday school learners are taught to make their cross.

This day is also linked to those who were not so fortunate and lost their lives to the COVID-19 pandemic virus.

DKII Brigit Kildare analogue wood clock is a personal interpretation based on the diamond centre lozenge depicted in the sample picture on this page.
